Technical difficulties and state of research in control of the canker stain of plane tree. The danger of Ceratocystis fimbriata is not only connected to the susceptibility of the plane tree species (Platanus x acerifolia), but above all to the problems inherent in controlling the disease, especially in urban environment. In effect, it is careless or negligent human intervention which is chiefly responsible for the diffusion of the disease. Unfortunately the different methods of control (surgical healing, chemical control, biological control, genetic improvement) experimented so far, all for different reasons, reveal limited efficiency. To date, prevention appears to be the only efficient method, but only however if certain technical, legal anf administrative regulations are strictly observed.
