Initial data on the supply of marble for the Ploutonion

Chapter
Publication Date:
2016
abstract:
recent excavations brought to light the famous Ploutonion, the sanctuary of Hades and Persephone described by the ancient literary sources, revealing a complex history dating back to the Archaic period. Since the Augustan era, the Ploutonion underwent a significant phase of monumentalisation, which continued also after the earthquake of AD 60 and during the middle-imperial epoch with various restoration activities. the architectures of the Ploutonion are characterized by the extensive use of travertine, while only some sectors (tholos, neronian portico) were entirely constructed in white local marble. the archaeometric analyses concerned some of these architectural materials and the colossal statue of Hades.
