abstract:
The present work provides a synthesis of recent evolution in the knowledge of the last glaciation in the Alps from the reconstruction of the glacial dynamics in the lower Tagliamento catchment and the Julian Prealps to the correlation with other well constrained Alpine systems. The spread of the valley glaciers at their maximum advance occurred at about 26-28 ka cal BP and maintained, with oscillations of the front, till about 22 ka cal BP. After 19.5 ka cal BP the glaciers withdrew into the valley. The southeastern Alps experienced large valley
glaciers, despite the low average elevation, because of higher precipitation rates, that determined
also an Equilibrium Line Altitude estimated between 1100-1200 m a.s.l. for the Last Glacial Maximum.
