Abstract:
The history of Tivoli is intimately linked to its river (Aniene or Teverone), whose water, if, on the one hand, has represented a fundamental resource for the community, facilitating the development of industrial activities, on the other hand, it has caused many disasters for the settlement and the local economy. For these reasons, the community and the Pope himself arranged many hydraulic operations to repair and maintain the situation before the flood, in order to contrast the destroying
action of the river.
In this regard, it is important to study the solutions put in place by the Society of Jesus, which wanted to affirm its territorializing action on Tiburtino territory. This study, analyzing the documents and maps kept by the Archivum Romanum Societatis Jesu, aims to interpret and reconstruct the link between Gesuits and their territory, highlighting their political and management
skills.
