abstract:
The capabilities of the ITER-ECRH systems in terms of localized heating and current drive for extended physics application of ECCD in ITER are investigated by means of the GRAY beam tracing code, looking at possible synergy between the Upper and Equatorial launcher. Calculations for a 'new' design of the Upper launcher (EPL), using four upper ports and front steering mirrors that allow both optimum focusing of the beams and an extended plasma deposition region, show that narrow, high peak current density profiles may be maintained over the radial range 0.4<=ro<=0.9. Calculations for the Equatorial launcher, where only the toroidal injection angle Beta can be varied, show that the power deposition and current drive location is limited to ro<=0.55 due to incomplete power absorption at Beta>40 degrees. Performances close to the center can be improved with a poloidal tilt of the low and top front mirrors. This study is mainly devoted to provide guide to the design of both launchers in order to optimize their performances, depending on the physics application.
