Passive Microwave Rainfall Error Analysis using High-Resolution X-band Dual-Polarization Radar Observations in Complex Terrain

Conference Poster
Publication Date:
2015
abstract:
Representation of high precipitation variability over complex topography is difficult by using rain gauges. Satellite-based precipitation (SBP) measurements are quasi-global and high resolution, and can potentially be used in filling this observational gap. o SBP products have errors, therefore, requiring bias adjustment or merging with more accurate precipitation products such as those obtained during experimental studies with research radars. Study objectives: 1) Conduct data matching of high spatial and temporal resolution rainfall estimates derived from dual-polarization X-band radar (XPOL) observations during various field experiments over complex topography with passive microwave (PMW) sensors onboard different earth orbiting platforms. 2) Evaluate matched rainfall estimates of several PMW and XPOL datasets at different space and time resolution.
