abstract:
This essay deals with the plague epidemic which, between 1656 and 1658, struck the Kingdom of Naples. Thanks to not well known documents, we have tried to give an overview of this epidemic: firstly, describing the spread of the plague in the Kingdom and, secondly, trying to give some quantitative data on mortality caused by this serious disease. This research shows that the spread of this plague in Southern Italy was wide and death rates were very high, higher than it has been supposed until now.
