Interfacing primary cortical neurons with PMCS TiO2 films to design bio-hybrid memristive device mimicking neuromorphic functionalities

Abstract:
In the framework of the project MaDEleNA, funded by PAT Trento, aimed to interfacebiological systems with memristive surfaces to study hybrid neuromorphic functionalities,we report a comprehensive study of the biocompatibility of titanium dioxide films (TiO2)prepared by Pulsed Microplasma Cluster Source (PMCS). All the films showed consistentneurocompatibility that favors the adhesion and growth of murine cortical neurons. More-over, the bioelectrical activity of the neuronal culture grown on the TiO2film has beensuccessfully measured by patch-clamp electrophysiology. Our results satisfy the goal to de-sign memristive bio-hybrids mimicking neuronal plasticity for applications in cognitive andrehabilitation neurosciences.
