abstract:
The presence of fluids and their possibility of movement within rocks are important technical properties of building materials. It is well known that voids of irregular shape, different dimensions and random distribution are present in all kinds of rock. The number and dimension of pores can be investigated by porosimetry, but this kind of analysis is not always enought to justify the presence and movement of fluids. A technical characterisation, carried out on different lithologies commoly used in the Veneto region, has shown the presence of an interesting relationship between water absorption by immersion and by capillarity. This relationship was confirmed by further analysis on various types of stone of different origin. These frequently understimated propieties man be of great importance for the proper utilisation of building materials, was well as for the choice of suitable consolidants and /or treatments
