Current generation by electron cyclotron waves

Academic Article
Publication Date:
1983
abstract:
We compute the steady-state current density generated by electron cyclotron waves injected in the plasma, almost perpendicularly to the external magnetic field, taking into account the relativistic effects on the shape of the resonant region in velocity space. The current-carrying distribution function relevant to the presence of a turbulence of ordinary waves with a frequency close to the electron cyclotron frequency is analytically computed. The behaviour of the induced current densityJ? and of the ratio J?/P between the current density and the powerP absorbed by the plasma, as functions of the frequency of the wave and of the angular spread ?? of the wave vectors, that characterize the turbulent spectrum, are given.
