VERY HIGH-RESOLUTION GAMMA-CAMERA BASED ON POSITION-SENSITIVE PHOTOMULTIPLIER TUBE

Abstract:
Single photon emitting radiopharmaceuticals are the most used in nuclear medicine. To this aim many detection techniques more or less complicated have being develop over the yaers but spatial resolution did not improve over the limit of few millimeters. In this work we present some results relative to a novel gamma camera prototype completely realised to localize biological structures sized less than 1 mm. It is baesd on te use of a new position sensitive photomultiplier tube recently developed by Hamamatsu : 1.3 mm of intrinsic spatial resolution was obtained coupling a CsI(Tl) scintillation crystal to the position sensitive photomultiplier tube. images of whole brain and cerebellum of a guinea pig werw acquired after the injection of HMPAO 99m -Tc labelled and comapred with the analogous one obteined by a standard gamma camera.
