Giuseppe Antonio Risso (Nice, 1777-1845), considered one of the fathers of the niçois naturalists' school, became interested during its life in almost every aspect of the natural sciences. His geological explorations of the Maritime Alps, although of lesser importance if compared to his work in the zoological and botanical fields, laid the foundations for the development of the geological study of the region during the XIXth century.
