abstract:
In this paper we present the finite element code NOSA for the study of age-old masonry vaults, aimed at determining the mechanical behaviour of masonry stmctures and guiding the choice of strengthening operations as well. Masonry is modelled as a non-linear elastic material with zero tensile strength and infinite compressive strength. Vaults and domes are discretised with shell elements based on the love-Kirchhoff hypothesis. The NO SA code has been employed to study the
stmctural behaviour of the cross vault of the Church of San Ponziano in Lucca.
