abstract:
Semen was collected daily from several of 72 fowls, pooled, and diluted with an equal volume of reconstituted freeze-dried commercial diluent (group 1), van Wambeke's diluent (group 2), and Lake and Ravie's diluent (group 3). The semen was diluted and stored at 5C, and used in 0.075-ml doses to inseminate [female][female] within 2 h of collection. Egg laying was recorded from 32 to 46 wk of age. For the 3 diluents, the percentage of unfertilized eggs averaged 7.240.31, 6.290.31 and 8.050.39 resp., and egg hatchability 89.30.4, 90.10.4 and 88.30.5 ( P<0.05 for both traits). Hatchability was lower for eggs laid during the first 2 days after insemination (87.2-88.7) than for those laid 3-7 days after insemination (90.0-91.8).
