The essence of the new design approach is that the new must revitalize the old by creating a new function, with a modern image, in order to accommodate the changing and current needs of the users. The benefits extend far beyond the conservation of cultural heritage. The reuse must always be investigated, because it is the highest form of restoration. Each monument has a different predisposition to be transformed. Some monuments can be converted in many new uses, due to their availability of space and the flexibility of the new project. The project must respect the monument in its current condition. Minimalistic actions can be acceptable if based on recognizable and reversible new solutions. The ancient structures must be integrated with the new ones. Old and new elements are overlapped in deliberate, but gentle, juxtaposition. This research provides a discussion on this topic and suggests case studies that show that there is still much to be done to define operative actions, to use heritage creatively. The methodology enabled the reuse of the ancient monuments, that are today abandoned and in a state of decay. The key to success is to work with the monuments rather than against them.
