"...the result can be bold and startling". Crateri figurati d'età geometrica dalla necropoli di Siderospilia (Priniàs)

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2019
abstract:
The ongoing study of the Geometric pottery found in the excavation of the Siderospilia necropolis (Prinias) allowed to single out a group of large kraters on tall pedestals whose figured painted decoration is inspired by the iconographic repertoire of the coeval Cretan metalwork and other artefacts in different media. The present paper deals with the morphologic and technic aspects of this production, the cross-craft interactions between pottery and metalwork, and suggests some brief concluding remarks on the role played by these oversized kraters in the dynamics of identity construction in Iron Age Crete.
