abstract:
Right before the Modern Age, military engineers and architects were engaged in the planning of new fortification systems suitable for defending the coastal villages and the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, which at that time was the scene of the conflict between Christians and Muslims. Although later, a secure system of defence was built up also in the Kingdom of Sardinia and today its design and construction phases can be partially reconstructed through working notes, reports, design drawings, maps and other important documents stored in the major European archives.
