The article deals with the increasing, but not yet well known, phenomena of the counterfeiting of electronic components. The most important aspects related to counterfeiting are described: fraudolent counterfeiting, components recycling, risk involved, traceability of the components chain, legal aspects and responsibilities, controls and prevention, etc. The article takes origin from the publication of IEC Technical Specification TS 62668-1 "Process managment for avionics- Counterfeiting prevention - Part 1: Guidelines for avoiding the use of counterfeited, fraudolent and recycled electronic components"
