Territorial information systems : the role of standards

The recent growth in commercial interest in Geographic Information Systems has lead to a considerable increase in development and activity in this, field. The introduction of this type of systems has clearly identified a requirement to standardise geographic data structures on an international basis, since the absence of uniform standards for the transfer of digital spatial data is hindering the exchange of data and increasing costs.
