abstract:
The volume consists of five studies dealing with various aspects of the question of 'opposites' in the work of Giordano Bruno, with reference to the natural world as well as to the human moral and symbolic-mental world. For Bruno, the secret of the art of nature - as well as of human art - lies in the dialectic of opposites, which he considers as "profound magic": from the two basic opposing principles of cold and heat through to the mythological-metaphysical contraries of Jove and Oceanus, which the Nolan philosopher links with the ideas of transcendent and immanent divinity. According to him, the principle of opposites not only lies at the root of the variety in nature, but is also at the basis of progress and regress in civilization.
