Lack of genotoxic effects (micronucleus induction) in human lymphocytes exposed in vitro to 900 MHz electromagnetic fields.

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2003
abstract:
In the present study we investigated the induction of genotoxic effects and the effects on cell cycle kinetics in human peripheral blood lymphocytes following exposure to electromagnetic fields used in mobile communication systems (frequency 900 MHz). The experiments were performed on peripheral blood from 20 healthy donors and several conditions were tested by varying exposure duration, Specific Absorption Rate level (0,2-1,6 W/kg) and signal (continuous wave or GSM signal). Moreover, different cell cycle phases have been studied by exposing both unstimulated (G0 phase) and PHA stimulated lymphocytes. In all cases no statistically significant differences were detected when control samples were compared to exposed ones, indicating lack of genotoxic when the exposure conditions as close as possible to a real 900 MHz cellular phone call are adopted.
