Abstract:
Flue gasdesulfurizationbymeansoflimestoneinjectionundersimulatedfluidizedbedoxyfiringcondi-
tions wasinvestigated,withaparticularfocusonparticleattritionandfragmentationphenomena.An
experimental protocolwasapplied,basedontheuseofcomplementarytechniquesthathadbeenprevi-
ously developedforthecharacterizationofattritionofsorbentsinair-blownatmosphericfluidizedbed
combustors. Theextentandpatternoflimestoneattritionbysurfacewearinthedensephaseofaflu-
idized bedwereassessedinbenchscalefluidizedbedexperimentsundersimulatedoxyfiringconditions.
Sorbent samplesgeneratedduringtheoxyfiringtestswerefurthercharacterizedfromthestandpoint
of fragmentationuponhighvelocityimpactbymeansofaparticleimpactor.Theexperimentalresults
were comparedwiththosepreviouslyobtainedwiththesamelimestoneunderair-blownatmospheric
fluidized bedcombustionconditions.Theprofounddifferencesintheattritionandfragmentationextents
and patternsassociatedwithoxyfiringascomparedtoair-blownatmosphericcombustionandtherole
played bythedifferentattrition/fragmentationpathswerehighlighted.Inparticular,itwasnotedthat
attrition couldeffectivelyenhanceparticlesulfationunderoxyfiringconditionsbycontinuouslydisclosing
