abstract:
Documentation regarding the representation of ancient cities and their architectures is a research field
developed to date by some specific sectors - such as drawing, history and restoration of architecture,
archaeology of landscapes, etc. - and the Engineering area has only recently been interested in it. ese
spheres of competence touch the material and immaterial assets of cultural heritage that can be integrated
into a common project: valorisation as a form of knowledge, protection, communication and performance.
Archaeologists, architects, engineers, technicians and architects have explored the architectural and
engineering works of the Roman age in many ways. What is still lacking is the relationship between
tangible assets, such as the link between architecture and landscape and the intangible ones, such as the
transformations of the past and the future prospects of fruition and/or innovation in these spaces. Recent
studies have allowed a detailed understanding of ancient artefacts; the innovative survey techniques give
the opportunity of widening the boundaries of the representation, showing state of facts, virtual
reconstruction essays, restoration and reuse projects, in a way first almost unimaginable. is is a
documentary opportunity that can be further addressed and integrated towards the purpose of
communication and enhancement.
