A PARAMETRIC STUDY OF WATER ON DECK PHENOMENA

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2000
abstract:
Water on deck of ships is divided into two main scenarios. One is caused by plunging breakers hitting the deck house or equipments directly. The other one resembles the breaking of a dam and is focused on in this paper. Bow deck wetness of a moored ship with blunt bow in regular head sea waves is studied numerically by assuming the flow is two-dimensional in the centerplane of the ship. It is shown that nonlinearities of the incident waves and due to wave-body interaction are important. Stem overhang has a limited but positive effect in relevant design conditions. Dam breaking models and shallow water approximations for the flow on the deck have limited practical use. Impact pressure distribution is studied in details. It is demonstrated that three- dimensional flow effects must be accounted for in future studies.
