Shape-Based Reconstruction from profiles for Reverse Engineering

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
1999
abstract:
The proposed methodology for surface reconstruction is based on the consideration that information explicitly or implicitly contained in the data set should be exploited to delineate a morphological structure on which the surface model can be set. In the specific context of surface reconstruction for reverse engineering, this aim is reached in the following steps: first, profiles are analysed in order to extract the main shape points and to simplify the profiles while keeping those points as constraints. Then, structural features, such as edges or sharp cuts, are recognized among adjacent profiles and used as constraints to build a triangular mesh. Examples of the filtering and reconstruction process will be given.
