The article offers a first historical and archaeological approach of the ruin "Cuccuru Casteddu". At the beginning it was probably a castle of the Byzantine Age, a fortress in the boundary between Marmilla and Trexenta. This was an area with intensive viability, already in Roman and Punic age, for the control of rich farming products. The ceramics refers to a continuity of the site from the third up to the eighth century and up to the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth century. The sources relating to the "Giudicato" of "Arborea", the relationship of the castle with the frontier of the Kingdom of Arborèa and the hypotheses on the causes of the disrepair of the castle, open the way to new theories and research perspectives.
