Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to present a systematic study of an outboard engine for fast planning vessel. Two test cases have been considered; the first one consists of the pod operating in propelled and un-propelled configuration in a cavitation tunnel whereas the latter consists of the the isolated un-propelled pod advancing at constant speed in a free surface conditions. In both cases, several speeds have been considered (for the propelled case a suitable propeller model has been adoped) and the numerical results are compared with experiments carried out at the CNR-INSEAN cavitation tunnel and model basin #1 for the two set of simulations, respectively. Numerical computations have been performed with the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equation solver Xnavis.
