The term `brownfield site' means real property, located in central areas of the cities, the redevelopment, or reuse
of which may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The ex -Fibronit site, on
active service for 50 years (1935- 1985), has been one of the biggest factories in the Country for asbestos-cement
manufactures. Following the growth of the city of Bari in the years '60-'70, the plant, nowadays, lies in a area of about 9
hectares surrounded by crowded quarters. Actually a ten- year decay and the abandonment of the property are the
characteristics of this area. This paper shows the analysis of the changes triggered on territory by the activities of the ex-
Fibronit factory. Unfortunately this is not an isolated case; all over the Country the brownfields are the heaviest heritage of
the industrialization process and of a industry yielding no longer sustainable
