abstract:
This paper discusses a multidisciplinary methodology for the 3D reconstruction of the hypothesized ancient landscape along the Tiber Valley North of Rome in the 8th century AD. As part of the CNR-ITABC Tiber Valley Virtual Museum project, we used quantitative evaluation of geological and ecological data, historical, archaeological and demographic information. Moving from theory and literature on spatial archeology, the project is implemented through advanced raster algebra operations in GRASS-GIS, output to maps which are then imported in the VUE terrain engine for photorealistic 3D landscape generation. © 2013 IEEE.
