abstract:
The basic goal of chemical analysis of fire debris is to estabilish the presence of materials in the remnants of a fire which might have helped to start or accelerate it. At first it seems thet a higly volatile fuel such as gasoline would go up in smoke along with the woods.
This is certainly what the arsonist expects. However, traces of fuel, inorganic chemicals or igniter residues often remain even after an intense fire, and successful collection and analysis of these residual accelerant samples is as much an art as a science.
The first duty of a chemistry analyst is to glean as much information as possible from the samples received.
