abstract:
The Bradanic foredeep is a Pliocene and
Pleistocene sedimentary basin portion of the post-
Messinian Apennines foredeep (Adriatic foredeep), which
migrated towards east with several deformative phases
during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Together with the
Murge peripheral bulge (Apulian Foreland) the Bradanic
foredeep is the shallow crustal expression of the Apulian or
Adria lithosphere subduction. The central sector of the
basin is characterized by a structural narrowing with the two
basin margins are far 20 km in outcrop and 1.5 km in depth.
The two tectonic domains converging in correspondence of
the Lavello-Banzi structural high stopped the thrusts propagation
with a drastic reduction of the subsidence rates
and accomodation space of the foredeep basin. This event
induced the beginning of a Pleistocene regressive phase
with a shallow water sea phase and the progressive basin filling
either toward northeast (Adriatic sea) or toward southeast
(Ionian sea) for the imposing of sedimentary supplies of
Apennine origin. In agreement with this datum, the phisiography
of the basin changed, developing either transversal
or axial asymmetry and inducing the sedimentation of the
outcropping Bradanic foredeep succession.
To evaluate the possible tectonic constraints in a regional
structural context as an control-element of the basin architecture
of the Bradanic foredeep basin during early
Pleistocene, in this work several data and models existing in
literature have been re-examined also through the analysis
and interpretation of deep data (wells and seismic profiles).
This review contribution aims to focus on a better definition
of the last evolutive phases of the Bradanic basin by
means of new synthetic analysis of deep data related to surface
evidences and proposing a local basin-architecture
reconstruction.
