abstract:
Five female shoulder busts found at Syracuse and Morgantina (Sicily) area decorated with large, painted panels worn over red-purple chitons. The panels show some figured scene: women performing a dance or, on one example, a complex mythological scene, the rape of Persephone. It is not difficult to assume that the rectangular panel represents a real piece of cloth, perhaps a characteristic part of the dress of a cult statue, as described by tha ancient sources. Lastly, how did a possible production of decorated and precious textiles fit into the craftsmanship of late Classical and Hellenistic Sicily?
