abstract:
Drawing from historical sources spanning the 11th and 14th centuries, this paper outlines the settlement and landscape dynamics of the administrative district of Siurgus from the 13th century at least.
The study of toponomastic sources together with the persistence of church structures has been fundamental in this research. It is suggested that this region was part of an ancient state entity, perhaps dependent on Calares only on paper, which may have initiated a claim for its own sovereignty: a Iudicatus Barbariae or Ogliastrae, whose territory was again associated with the Giudicato kingdom of Calari and disappeared with the rise of Arborea perhaps at the beginning of the 11th century, as indicated a century later by the confirmation of grants by Benedetta of Calari to the Suelli diocese. From the splitting of this Iudicatus, descendant from the duchy of Ospitone, the medieval administrative districts and their village distribution emerged.
