Urban transformation and public spaces in
waterfront renewal: a case study
In the Eighties a phase of urban transformation
began, which has changed, through the
renewal of industrial areas, port facilities and
railway lines, the appearance of many Italian
and European cities. These transformation
processes are leading to the creation of new
public spaces and the re-appropriation of
these places by citizens. The regeneration of
urban waterfronts in course of development
in the contemporary territories are part of
the complex ,,creative? operations which are
becoming the new elements of attraction of
the city. Starting from these premises, aim of
this paper is to illustrate a regeneration project
under construction in Hamburg involving the
155 hectares area of HafenCity and where
by 2025 about 12,000 new citizens are
expected. The regeneration project which
will be illustrated is based on the recovery
of the maritime city identity as well on a
strong interaction between mixed-use land, attention to public spaces of the waterfront,
urban and architectural quality, integration
with the consolidated city and sustainability of
interventions.
