CASI-1500 hyperspectral remote sensing data and in situ measurements within the IOSMOS project activities for coastal water bio-optical properties assessment

abstract:
The study presents the preliminary results obtained from the integration of CASI-1500 airborne hyperspectral data and MODIS satellite data with the in situ bio-optical measurements performed to characterize the Ionian coastal water quality of the Basilicata Region in the framework of the IOnian Sea water quality MOnitoring by Satellite data (IOSMOS, ERDF Basilicata Region Operational Program 2007-2013) project activities. The coastal waters of this area are exposed both to natural and anthropogenic environmental degradation causing an increase of the nutrients (e.g., N and P) and contaminants content carried to the coastal waters by the river system. The project general approach aims at identifying the spectral characteristics that allows to distinguish waters dominated by different inherent optical properties (IOPs) and applying empirical and semi-empirical models to remotely sensed data (both airborne and satellite) to derive map water quality .
