abstract:
Through the historical developments of the Marmilla Castle, from its first attestation until the fifteenth century, we can trace the events of the Marmilla district and understand its capacity to sustain the production of grain and legumes. Since proto-historical times, Marmilla has been an area with a strong agricultural base, intensively exploited at various times, particularly for grain production. Due to such economic importance, Marmilla was always the focus of both the institutions that controlled these regions and the major Mediterranean powers. Especially during the Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Arborèa ruled over Marmilla through the eponymous castle. In addition to overseeing the kingdom's frontier and the roads, the castle controlled the rich grain-growing local production, which was fundamental for the aggressive policy at the core of the Kingdom of Arborèa's resistance against the greatest power of the fourteenth century: the Crown of Aragon. The productive importance of the constituency is also illustrated in documents recording the supplies of the castle in the fifteenth century.
