abstract:
The Castle of Marmilla was not only a valid bastion on the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Arborèa, but also a looming presence in the homonymous, peripheral district and the neighboring ones to watch over the rich agricultural productions of the fertile, surrounding countryside. Since the first mention, it is possible to appreciate the potential of the district in the production of cereals and pulses, manifest since proto-historical times and persistent through the following periods. That is why it was constantly the focus of the attention by the major Mediterranean powers, especially during the Middle Ages. These rich productions were indispensable to pursue the aggressive policy that allowed the Arborean Kingdom to hold its ground against at the greatest power of the 14th century: the Crown of Aragon.
