abstract:
The article examines the role played in Sardinia by religious orders in the foundation, custody and promotion of important sanctuaries, between the Middle Ages and the early modern age. In particular, the article focuses on the role played by the Benedictine orders in the custody and promotion of the martyrial sanctuaries that existed upon their arrival in the Island. The essay also examines the foundation of new Marian shrines by the mendicant orders between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the promotion of the cults linked to these shrines.
