Le migrazioni nei testi dei manuali italiani di storia e geografia

This study investigates the ways History and Geography textbooks in Italian secondary schools represented migrants and migrations in 2016, following a previous research con-ducted in 2011. This chapter presents the results related to the written texts. The ana-lyzed manuals have been selected integrating different sources: Amazon, bookstores and schools of Rome, Naples and Milan. Analytical inquiry forms have been developed in order to detect the space allocated to this topic and features of the contents such as thematic dimensions included, education style adopted, possible use of improper terms referred to migrants. The appearance in the textbooks analyzed of specific references to migrant-related policies shows that elements of the current debate about the topic have been incor-porated; references to policies aimed at limiting entries slightly prevail. Although representa-tion of migrants in terms of problem is present, as threat to national security and identity, migrants are mostly represented as "victims" forced to leave their countries; the dimension related to migrants as bearers of rights is seldom considered. When migrants are described in terms of resource, it is mainly referred to the economic point of view, secondly to the demographic aspect and finally to the cultural one; common is a conception of immigration policies based on "deserving", an aspect that is also embedded in the Italian laws.
