abstract:
Hydrodynamics of fluidized bed combustors may be optimized promoting the establishment of "Gulf
Stream" circulation patterns of fluidized particles to contrast the self-segregation of high-volatile fuel
particles during devolatilization. The present study is aimed at characterizing bed hydrodynamics in a pilot
scale fluidized bed combustor revamped to optimize combustion of high-volatile solid fuels. Time-resolved
pressure signals measured at different locations in the bed and in the plenum were analyzed in the time
and frequency domains. Results were compared with qualitative characterization of fluidization patterns by
visual observation of the bed surface.
