abstract:
The main factors affecting digital image quality in a digitization project are outlined and discussed. The imaging and acquisition process has the main impact on the quality of the images to be stored as a master file for preservation. It mainly depends on the equipment features and acquisition methodology. A second not less important quality aspect concerns the images for presentation. Recent developments of image compression techniques and standards allow nowadays the design of new services and the access to digital cultural contents by ever more differentiated classes of users.
