abstract:
Using Italian Population Registers, internal migration is traced from its high levels in the booming economy of the 1950s and 1960s to its lower levels in more recent decades. Movement at a variety of geographical scales - intra and inter provincial, intra and inter regional and by distance of move -is described and explained in terms of the changing demography of Italy, the increasing role of other forms of mobility like daily and weekly commuting, the rigidity of local labour markets, the growth of owner-occupied housing, and the slowing of the economy especially since 2008.
