The paper offers a general view of the future technological evolution of the diesel engine which will adapt to the more and more severe European standards regarding the emissions and fuel consumpions. The copmposition of liquid fuels will be more and more controlled, while gas fuels will be increasingly used thanks to its lower toxicity and its ability of cutting down particulate emissions.
