A GIS for the Study of the mid-Tiber valley. Comparisons between archaeological Settlements of the Sabine Tiberine Area

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2003
abstract:
This paper presents some results of a research project, which studied archaeological settlements that are located in the mid-Tiber valley. Two integrated Geographical Information Systems (GIS) were created in order to study geographic data on historical settlements in the area considered. The first GIS was a vector system, while the other was a raster system. These systems were coupled with GIS-based spatial analysis methods in order to recognise archaeological site patterns. Some statistical analyses and several thematic maps (lithology etc.) are shown and explained below. Especially on one of these (Fig. 3) drawn up from elaborated data of a remotely sensed image, marks of human lines are visible. Furthermore, the results obtained from the statistical analyses of the Roman archaeological settlement known as Cures Sabini are compared with results relative to various archaeological areas previously studied, such as Eretum [1] and [2] and Magliano Sabina [3], also located in the mid-Tiber valley.
