abstract:
This paper introduces a linguistic research on the polycentrism and particularism widespread in
medieval Campania. The entire area was involved in the permanence of the cultural linguistic
juridical heritage of the Byzantine and Lombard components which became incisive references to
build up an ethnical identity. They were retained either pure or contaminated in many cultural
linguistic witnesses coming from the coast and the inner part of the region. As the historical and
paleographical research has already stressed I point out that the continuities and discontinuities,
as well as both the innovative and conservative phenomena appearing in the medieval Latin
and Greek documents we received from the different centres of the area, can be identified only
studying the texts with a comparative examination and acknowledging the cultural properties of
each scriptorium. Particularly I focus on the Latin documentation from Naples and the Greek
documentation from the monastery of S.Maria of Pertosa (river Tanagro valley) by illustrating
some idiosyncrasies of these scriptae.
