A global call to action to improve the care of people with fragility fractures

Abstract:
Theageingofsocietyisdrivinganenormousincreaseinfragilityfractureincidenceandimposingamassiveburdenonpatients,theirfamilies,healthsystemsandsocietiesglobally.Disruptingthestatusquohasthereforebecomeanobligationandanecessity.InitiatedbytheFragilityFractureNetwork(FFN)ata"Presidents'Roundtable"duringthe5thFFNGlobalCongressin2016severalleadingorganisationsagreedthataglobalmultidisciplinaryandmultiprofes-sionalcollaboration,resultinginaGlobalCalltoAction(CtA),wouldbetherightstepforwardtoimprovethecareofpeoplepresentingwithfragilityfractures.Sofarglobalandregionalorganisationsingeriatrics/internalmedicine,orthopaedics,osteoporosis/metabolicbonedisease,rehabilitationandrheumatologywerecontactedaswellasnationalorganisationsinfivehighlypopulatedcountries(Brazil,China,India,JapanandtheUnitedStates),resultingin81societiesendorsingtheCtA.Wecallforimplementationofasystematicapproachtofragilityfracturecarewiththegoalofrestoringfunctionandpreventingsubsequentfractureswithoutfurtherdelay.Thereisanurgentneedtoimprove:?Acutemultidisciplinarycareforthepersonwhosuffersahip,clinicalvertebralandothermajorfragilityfractures?Rapidsecondarypreventionafterfirstoccurrenceofallfragilityfractures,includingthoseinyoungerpeopleaswellasthoseinolderpersons,topreventfuturefractures?Ongoingpost-acutecareofpeoplewhoseabilitytofunctionisimpairedbyhipandmajorfragilityfracturesToaddressthisfragilityfracturecrisis,theundersignedorganisationspledgetointensifytheireffortstoimprovethecurrentmanagementofallfragilityfractures,preventsubsequentfractures,andstrivetorestorefunctionalabilitiesandqualityoflife.
