The Salerno Valley (Campania continental margin, Italy): stratigraphic and structural styles and morpho-bathymetry of a Pleistocene half-graben

Abstract:
Some new results on the seismic stratigraphy and morpho-bathymetry of the Pleistocene sedimentary basin of the Salerno Valley, framed in the regional seismic stratigraphy of the passive continental margin off southern Campania are here presented. The original data include a Multibeam bathymetric survey of the Salerno Valley and multichannel and single channel seismic profiles, recently acquired onboard of the R/V Urania of the National Research Council of Italy (SISTERII oceanographic cruise). These data have been interpreted in order to investigate the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the basin during the Pleistocene. This area represents a good example for a better understanding of the geologic evolution of the extensional sedimentary basins offshore the Southern Italy.
