The possibilities of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2017
abstract:
Nowadays the Engineering of Materials has completed the conventional solutions (cast iron, welded steel and, in some cases, aluminium alloys) with new paradigms that have notably widened engineers' array of possibilities. Among them, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers - CFRP, hold notable importance. They are composite materials, obtained starting from long carbon fibres, characterized by high values of tensile strength and stiffness: a texture of fibers, constituting the resistance element, is opportunely embedded into a continuous matrix (epoxy resin) which makes it collaborative and allows the redistribution of stresses caused by external loads. The final result is a material that matches high resistance and stiffness values with excellent specifications of lightness, durability and resistance to corrosion, ideal for applications in aeronautical, automotive, naval, building and general engineering industry.
